Solid State series relays, at left, have no moving parts.  Relay Systems, Inc. has solid state relay models available in most configurations.  DC current ratings to over 30 amps and voltage ratings to 200VDC.  Solid state relays offer the benefit of no moving parts which eliminates contact related problems.  The model shown at left has 2 normally open and 2 normally closed contacts.

The RelayCard general purpose relay models come in 2 form C, 3 form C, 4 form C, 5 form C and 6 form C. All models are designed to be direct replacements for vapor style relays. No modifications to the electrical system. Models that incorporate Molex connector will need pin terminations installed the first time. Installation kit available that includes plug connector, pins and crimping tool. The RelayCard models all use the same 22 pin molex style connector.

The 4 form C relays and larger use 2 molex style connectors. The 22 pin connector allows 2 termination points for each circuit just as a fast-on has 2 tabs per circuit and use of a 3 form C load relay socket. This makes installing a circuit at any time an easy operation, just terminate with pin and install into plug connector. 2 form C load relays can be upgraded to 3 form C at any time. RelayCard interlocks can be paralleled or as an option high current models are available to 30 amps or more. 2 form C and 4 form C models have magnetic blowouts with load switching to 150 Vdc. All models incorporate over voltage protection that drops out relay over 90 Vdc to protect contact tips.

The RelayCard 8 OEM model, right, represents eight independent 3 form C relays built on a single PC board. This configuration is available in a single relay or multiple panel with 12 or more relays. These cards can be stacked and Relay Systems, Inc. can fit as many as 40 relays in a one foot square. Try doing that with a vapor style relay!

The versatility that was designed into the RelayCard makes it appealing for use in both old and new locomotives and with the ability to be controlled with CMOS or TTL signals makes it the perfect choice for integration into computer control systems. The RelayCard V is designed for the customer that wants a single vapor style replacement relay. It is the same size and shape as a vapor style with the same fast-on configured top. It incorporates most of the same features as the RelayCard with a plug and go package. Whether you buy from the middle man or direct from vapor chances are Relay Systems Inc. can save you money. We offer Quality, low cost relays utilizing modern patented technology and all competitively Made in the USA.

RelayCard 8 model pictured above. This one is mounted on a one foot square mounting base complete with integral tie bars. 4 base mounting bolts are all that’s required to install the RelayCard. The model shown above has seven 3 form C and one 6 form C load relays installed. Also pictured above is an adaptor harness with molex style connector on one end and shielded female fast-ons on the other end. This allows use of molex style connector without having to install pin terminations on existing locomotive wiring harness.

Relay Systems, Inc.

introduces it’s new AC Solid State Fan Contactor. This hybrid contactor offers our patented RelayCard technology along with state of the art AC solid state relays, combined in a package that yields a direct replacement for Square D style contactors. The modular design that is incorporated into all of our relays is also present in the AC fan contactor. Replacement of main components including AC load relays, control board and auxiliary load relays. The model shown above is complete with it’s own thermostatically controlled fan and requires only a vent in AC cabinet. Other models have different heat sink configurations that allow use in a pressurized AC cabinet. Such models would not incorporate a heat sink fan, cooling is accomplished by the flow of pressurized air. Air flow would generally come from an external blower or piping directly from traction motor cooling duct. This contactor can be used alone or in mixed installations with mechanical style contactors. Models available with three pole switching with slightly larger foot print. Current ratings on standard models are 125 amps continuous with larger models to 250 amps continuous and higher.

The AC-3, pictured at left, is the 3 pole version of the model above.  AC models are designed for switching 3 phase AC locomotive voltage.  All models come with a heatsink and can be ordered with or without a cooling fan.

The RelayCard series marks a new age in locomotive switching technology. The hybrid design combines state of the art control circuitry with low cost replaceable square type load relays yielding a switching platform that’s reliable, inexpensive and upgradeable. Perfectly suited for all types of railroads and rebuilders, both big and small. Designed for automated production this relay allows for mass production to meet varying needs and reduce lead times. The modular design allows a customized configuration without the high costs associated with small custom orders. This would better serve our smaller customers or larger railroads looking for custom orders while maintaining parts interchangeability. A solid state control board is housed along with a bright red LED status indicator, a Molex connector and the load relay socket. The load relay plugs into the control housing allowing replacement of either component separately. This reduces inventory costs since the average load relay is under $25. Fast-on models and custom connectors are also available. For OEM and larger railroads the RelayCard can be built onto a single board with as many as a dozen relays operating independent of each other. This model would still allow for easy load relay replacement and would have a repair and return or unit exchange on the control boards.

Relay Systems, Inc. is committed to providing our customers with value added products and services.  The drawing at left depicts our current development, an AC locomotive cooling fan contactor incorporating AC solid state relays with an integral sequential cooling fan controller.  The built in sequential controller keeps track of the running time of each fan and turns on the lowest running time first.
